Top 5 Reasons to Get the PMP Designation

The Project Management Professional (PMP) title from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is a worthwhile accomplishment to add to your resume for a couple of very important reasons.

1. In many ways, it is similar to having – or not having – a college degree: if you don’t have the PMP, there are many opportunities for which you will not even be able to apply. If you can’t even get review your credentials, it is very unlikely that you’ll get the job.

2. Preparing for the PMP Exam allows you to integrate, and organize, your experience in a coherent and useful way.

3. It offers you with a common language and frame of reference, as you change from one engagement to another.

4. The PMP title gives you instantaneous credibility when moving into a new position, or dealing with a new stakeholder group.

5. Having the PMP designation is an important differentiator in this depressed economy. The competition is stiff, so make sure that you have the credentials that employers will be desiring.

If you have lots of experience – even decades of experience as a Project Manager, you may be hesitant to spend the time and effort to get yet another designation; however, take it from someone who felt the same way, I’m really glad that I made the effort and got the designation.

Having the PMP designation can do a lot for your career; however, in this economy, even the PMP won’t ensure you steady employment; therefore, it’s wise to have a backup plan as well.
